Police: Hollywood publicist slain in random robbery by bicyclist

Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen was murdered as she was driving through Beverly Hills, California, in a random "robbery gone bad," by a man who killed himself last week, according to preliminary findings in the Beverly Hills police investigation.

Speculation that Chasen was targeted by a professional hit was shot down Wednesday by investigators who said much of what has been reported by the media since her killing three weeks was untrue.

Harold Martin Smith, 43, was apparently riding his bicycle when he shot Chasen several times as she was on her way home from a Hollywood movie premiere party, police said.

Smith later committed suicide with the same gun that was used in the Chasen killing, Beverly Hills Police Chief David Snowden said Wednesday. Smith shot himself in the head last week as police approached him for questioning as "a person of interest" while he was at his Hollywood apartment building.

A preliminary ballistics test showed that Smith's gun was used in the slaying of Chasen, 64, said Beverly Hills Detective Sgt. Mike Publicker.

"With Mr. Smith's background, we believe most likely it was a robbery gone bad," Publicker said. "We believe it was a random act."

Publicker said it appeared no connection existed between Chasen and Smith prior to slaying.

"The detectives were able to do numerous interviews and through the information obtained in the interviews, it appears that he did act alone," Publicker said. "We believe his mode of transportation was by bicycle."

Authorities said the investigation, which is 60% to 70% complete, remains ongoing.

"There are additional interviews to be conducted, but this is our belief at this time," Publicker said.

"Carjackings are not unusual in Los Angeles, but "in our city it's more than exceedingly rare," said Chief Snowden of Beverly Hills. "It's non-existent."

"We don't believe it was a professional hit, and this is an open and ongoing investigation," Snowden said.

Smith, an ex-convict, pulled a handgun and shot himself as Beverly Hills detectives approached him at Hollywood's Harvey Apartments last Wednesday.

The television show "America's Most Wanted" put police in touch with a tipster who will likely received a $125,000 reward, Publicker said.

Ronni Chasen's Will: Estate Worth $6.1 Million in 1994

Slain publicist valued personal property at $4.7 million and left thousands of dollars to various charities, according to documents posted online.

Publicist Ronni Chasen left behind a will that valued her estate at $6.1 million at the time the document was written, in 1994, according to TMZ.

That figure includes personal property worth $4.7 million, income from personal property worth $500,000 and real-estate holdings valued at $900,000, according to the documents, which TMZ posted online.

In the will, Chasen left her "playbill collection and other memorabilia relating to the motion picture business" to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, under the condition that any exhibition of the items be accompanied by a noticed saying they are "from the collection of Ronni Chasen."

Chasen -- who was murdered in her car last month in Beverly Hills after leaving the Burlesque premiere afterparty -- also left several thousand dollars to various charities, including $20,000 to Hole in the Wall Gang Fund, $10,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and $5,000 each to the American Film Institute, to UCLA's Women's Cancer Research Foundation and to the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Also according to the will, Chasen intended to leave three-quarters of her estate to her mother, who has since died. In that event, Chasen designated a niece, Melissa Cohen, to receive a large sum of money. That's a marked contrast to what Chasen left another niece, Jill Cohen: $10.

"I have intentionally and with full knowledge of the consequences omitted to provide for my niece, Jill Cohen, also known as Jill Gatsby, except for the gift of $10," the will reads.

TMZ notes that supporting documents state that another will was prepared for Chasen in 2006 but has not been located.

Chasen's brother, Larry Cohen, who is applying to be the special administrator of the estate, said he thinks the will could be in a safe-deposit box.

The will surfaced a day after a man police believe was connected to Chasen's murder shot and killed himself in the lobby of the Harvey Apartments, a former Hollywood hotel-turned apartment complex. BHPD had been serving the man, identified as a "person of interest," a search warrant related to the case at the time.

Palm Springs Festival Offering $100,000 Reward in Ronni Chasen Shooting

Organizers, who say the publicist played a big role in bringing celebrities to the event, are seeking information leading to the arrest and conviction of her murderer.

Because publicist Ronni Chasen, who was murdered in Beverly Hills early Tuesday morning, played a big role in bringing celebrities to the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, the festival is offering a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her murderer.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner announced the reward Wednesday.

"Famed Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen has been my partner in selecting all honorees and presenters for the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala for the past 10 years," Matzner said in a statement. "Ronni handled all negotiations with the studios, and she and her team made all of the arrangements to bring the celebrity honorees to Palm Springs for the event. The honorees were Ronni's responsibility until they arrived in Palm Springs."

He added that Chasen was "a very good lady, a good friend and a genius at her craft. Her death is very, very sad and mystifying. ... She will be very missed by all in the festival family and by me especially!"

The festival is asking that anyone with information about Chasen's death contact the Beverly Hills Police Department Tip Line at (310) 288-2656.
