‘Garfield’ Cartoonist Apologizes for Veterans Day Offense

Jim Davis says the timing of the 'National Stupid Day' strip was 'unintentional.'

Garfield cartoonist Jim Davis has apologized for the "regrettable" timing of a comic strip which joked about "National Stupid Day" on Veterans Day.

"Please accept my apologies for any offense today's Garfield may have created. It was unintentional and regrettable," a statement from Davis said, according to Reuters.

Thursday's strip featured an exchange between the famous pudgy cat and a spider in which the spider says that if he's squished, there will be an annual day of remembrance in his honor.

The final frame of the strip featured a classroom of spiders asking why they celebrate "National Stupid Day."

Davis, who has a son who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the cartoon was written almost a year before it actually ran.
